Recent Projects

  • Map mashup of haridressers
A map of the 60+ haridressers, with prices, in the region of Sonderborg, Denmark. The map was made from the spreadsheet, you’ll find at the bottom of the article. A rather large project involving calling every salon for a price check.
  • Theme for the Online Journalism Blog
A theme designed specifically for the OJ Blog. It was built as a child theme upon the WordPress Theme Framework Thematic. The process required manipulating WordPress Hooks and Actions, to add custom functionality to the design and theme functions.
  • Events Mapping Mashup
Made by combining Google Calendar, Yahoo Pipes and Google Maps. It maps all events during the Local Democracy Week 2009 using the data from the events calndar.
  • Local Bloggers’ Mashup
A quick and dirty mashup of the numerous local blogs that keep springing up around Birmingham. Built as an example for BeVocal.org.uk using a combination of Google Spreadsheets and Yahoo pipes.
  • BeVocal.org.uk
A blog about social media, public data, mashups and data visualisation. I designed and developed the site using WordPress and am currently functioning as a blogger on the site.
  • Birmingham Recycled Promo
A promotional video produced for the local environmental news blog Birmingham Recycled. The video was shown at an event featuring final year student projects, for which I won an award for best web and new media presentation.
  • Live Blogging Digital Britain Unconferences
Doing my part in the consultation process for the Digital Britain Interim Report I was live blogging, first the West Midlands Unconference, and later the release party. As an experiment, I used a friendfeed group to pull together various feeds and publish my updates.
  • Live Blogging JEEcamp
On behalf of the Online Journalism Blog I was live blogging JEEcamp, the Journalism Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. On the day I was using CoverItLive, Twitter, Friendfeed and Qik to document the whole day. I also wrote a piece for Created in Birmingham outlining the main points.
  • WxWM Social Media Panel
At the West by West Midlands event I talked about the difference between using Social Media as a professional tool versus using it for pleasure and entertainment. The border between the two can be hard to distinguish, but as a journalist it’s a crucial one to be aware of when reporting and researching.
  • Birmingham Recycled
An environmental news blog for Birmingham and the areas surrounding  the city. I wanted to test the boundaries between journalism and blogging, aiming to find the perfect match between journalism as a product and journalism as a process.
I designed and developed the website using WordPress, and during my time as an editor, I was in charge of 20+ online journalist students working for the site. Currently run by @NatalieAdcock I’m hoping the site will continue to grow and explore new media journalism.
  • WordPress Theme : Collaborate
My first full WordPress theme. Inspired by the growing number of collaborative blogs such as Mashable and Techcrunch. The theme aims to make it easy to distinguish between authors and topics.
  • Web Design Portfolio
This is more of a general item, but I have done quite a bit of web design for various clients. I only code to W3C standards for both CSS and (X)HTML. I use WordPress as the content management system for everything and have come to a point where I can literally code a theme in my sleep.
  • Live Blogging Citizen Journalism Conference
An unconference organised by Paul Bradshaw to draw together media professional and an non-professional bloggers. I was lucky enough to do some live reporting on behalf of the Online Journalism Blog. This was before the genius of Twitter, Friendfeed and CoverItLive was available, so it wasn’t really live, but close.
